We are pleased to announce the publication of our Guide to the Hungarian Implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)

Epbd Guide Borito Honlap

At our mini-conference on 12 February 2026, we presented our new publication (available in Hungarian only), which aims to support the Hungarian implementation of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), updated in 2024.

The guide is intended for corporate professionals in the Hungarian construction and building economy sectors and related fields (e.g. financiers, architects), as well as specialised journalists and public administration actors. The Directive sets the direction for the building sector for decades to come – and the complex system of EU requirements must now be implemented at national level. This will not only reduce carbon emissions from buildings and enhance their sustainability, but also help lower household energy costs.

The publication is based on the comprehensive analysis of Efficient Buildings Europe. We have prepared an adapted version tailored to the Hungarian context. We identified ten key thematic areas and invited experts to explore the most important national challenges and solutions in dedicated chapters – covering topics such as zero-emission buildings, mandatory renovation requirements, and the building renovation passport.

Hungarian authors:

  • Zoltán Balogh (President, KNX Hungary Building Automation Association): Smart homes and technology-ready buildings

  • László Bihari (President, Energy Efficiency Financing Coalition): Financing

  • Dr. Tamás Csoknyai (Associate Professor, Department of Building Services Engineering, BME): Building Renovation Passport and Energy Performance Certificates

  • Dr. Áron Horváth (Managing Director, MEHI): Why the National Building Renovation Plan (NBRP) counts

  • Ilona Szécsi Illésné (Programme Lead, EU Peers, MEHI & Energiaklub Climate Policy Institute): One-stop-shop renovation services

  • Dr. Zoltán Magyar (Retired Associate Professor, BME; Vice President, Hungarian Association of Construction Science): Indoor Environmental Quality

  • Anikó Pálffy (Professional Lead, MEHI): Minimum Energy Performance Standards for non-residential buildings and the renovation pathway for residential buildings

  • András Perger (Head of Energy Programme, Energiaklub Climate Policy Institute): Phasing out fossil fuels from buildings
